Perhaps this offers a strong insight in to the future of the air care sector where devices offer a stronger functional benefit to consumers. There are many instances particularly in our working lives where the need to concentrate and maintain focus is vital for us to be effective. The concept of fragrancing our immediate, personal space rather than complete room environments to maintain concentration and fight off fatigue could be a major opportunity. Obviously the scenario, performance and design for this device needs to carefully considered, and in an age where wearable technology has become completely accessible and accepted, it may be possible to extend this to the category of air care. It was this in mind that Design Stream created the PAU (personal air care unit) concept to demonstrate the future for fragrance delivery. Chaz Nandra, Director at Design Stream said ‘The more we consider the function as well the positioning for air care devices, the more likely we can create designs which truly engage with the people for whom they were intended’.

At Design Stream believe it is all too easy to be trapped into patterns of thinking. Hence we make a continuous effort to emphasise the cultural context and relate the work we do to the world we live in.

Self initiated projects like these allow us to keep our approach to consultancy work relevant to present and future markets, and demonstrate our responsilbilty to keep challenging the boundaries of product innovation.

The format Design Stream uses for creating new ideas has successfully been implemented as a process on a number of client briefs

Wisps of Wellbeing

Mintel’s 2006 Global New Products Database revealed a thirst for innovation and identified several new and evolving trends which will have a huge impact on the products of tomorrow. One of these trends in the FMCG industry sees continual launches of products geared to enhance brain power, with the cosmetics industry wanting to move beyond the mainstream concept of anti aging and look at the issues of anti tiredness as a solution to hectic lifestyles and a lack of good sleep. All this is occurring at a time when inclusive design seems finally to be on the corporate agenda.
